Breast Feeding Covers – What Are They?

A lot of breastfeeding mothers are faced with a common problem when trying to breastfeed in public – how can you do it discreetly in a way that you don’t flash anybody?

Although many moms find it embarrassing to be breastfeeding in public, they really shouldn’t feel this way, as this is the most natural act in the world.  To avoid exposing themselves accidentally, some moms choose to switch to the bottle.  This is very unfortunate because natural breast milk contains so many more nutrients than formula does.  Even if they were to feed breast milk through the bottle, they would still be missing out on the bonding that takes place during breastfeeding.

Nursing stations are a nice alternative, except you can’t always locate one right when your baby’s screaming to be fed.  There just aren’t enough of those around.  And when your baby is hungry, s/he can’t wait, at all.

So how do you get around the problem?  Sometime ago, someone (no doubt a nursing mom!) created breast feeding covers, also known as nursing covers, to allow nursing moms to nurse in public without risking exposure their bosoms.  Breast feeding covers are shawls that you can wrap around yourself and your baby to hide them from everybody’s view – except that of your own.  There’s a neck strap you can use to secure the shawl to your neck, and the cover’s neckline has a ring that keeps the shawl away from your baby’s face so you can look down at your baby while breastfeeding.  This way, your baby enjoys fresh air while being shielded from distractions.

Breast feeding covers are really easy to use.  I keep several of them in my diaper bag.  When I need to nurse, I find a place to sit down, get out my breast feeding cover, stick my head through the strap, adjust it, put my baby under the cover, pull the cover around my shoulder, undo my nursing bra, and allow my baby to latch on.

Moreover, makers of breast feeding covers are realizing that nursing moms want to look good even while nursing!  Many breast feeding covers nowadays are trendy and chic looking.  There is such a wide selection of patterns and styles to choose from, that you’ll certainly find something that suits your taste.
